Illusions of Space and Motion

As the various methods of creating illusions of space and motion were described in Chapter 4 of Launching the Imagination, I found David Hockney's words; "No matter what the illusion created, it is a flat canvas and it has to be organized into shapes..." appropriate.  Using the mechanics of perspective, artists have been able to capture not only our imagination but our ability to fantasize beyond what is presented in a particular work. I am especially fond of Thomas Hart Benton and one of his many portrayals of Kansas City, his home town, and mine. Benton seemed to put a lot of expression into a variety of subplots as shown here.  Kansas City culture as shown in the stockyards, Board of Trade, theater, museums, and street life has been organized into shapes representing space and motion.
