Another Artistic Manifestation
The codex structure described in Launching the Imagination was an interesting way of devising artistic representations of the visual book. Codex or caudex, Latin for “trunk of a tree” was originally used by the Romans to bind together wooden or papyrus pages and form a sort of bound tablet. The earliest known codex of Greek origin was the 4th Century Codex Sinaiticus, a biblical manuscript. Artists have been using that format to create fascinating visuals of gallery quality. Stewart's Labyrinth is a good example. The codex as art from has become very popular as evidenced by the recent showing in San Francisco.

I love finding the etymology of words. Makes the meaning so much clearer. How exciting it would be to see an original bound tablet that the Romans constructed!
ReplyDeleteI love that too. I like Microsoft Word's capability to make it easy to explore words.
